11-22-63

many people my age and older remember this day as the anniversary of the day jfk was shot. on november 22, 1963 i was a 12 year old kid living in dallas.

but what i remember the day for, just as much, is as the day before the 1st anniversary of the day i watched my dog get run over on november 23, 1962.

that's not her, but it's as close as i could come up with from lookalike internet pictures of my cocker spaniel mutt. (i can't tell you her name because it's my secret code. i always use it as the answer to: *your 1st pet's name.*)

what i will tell you is that as an 11 year old i rode my bicycle a lot and all over the place and that she went with me most of the time.

one day we were headed up to the shopping center a few miles from home. it was the day the dallas public library bookmobile would be there. we were less than a block away and, as it turned out, so was the bookmobile.

******* saw it and got excited.

she ran after it happy, barking. me, pedaling as fast as i could behind when...all of a sudden ******* was sucked up under the vehicle and left lifeless, almost at my feet. she had a clean slit in her side. her heart was...in the middle of lanshire street just a few feet away from me. i really don't remember how we got home.

no disrespect meant to the kennedy family, but that's what i remember this time of year.

i was also going to tell you about louise, my 2nd dog, who hitchhiked all over the country with me in the early '70s, but i think i'll save that story for later.

(((hugs)))Rick.

I was born the day before Kennedy was assassinated. Same year even. My mom was watching the events of the horrible day as she received a call from the adoption agency that I had been born and were they interested in adopting a baby girl?

Your sweet dogs are resting easy in the arms of loved ones. Nothing like the love of an animal...they are so unconditional. I think that's what makes it so heartbreaking for us to lose them.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you, my friend.

your first puppy dog, *******, looks so very much like my first puppy dog, *****.

that must have been horrifying for you then and the memory still so.

very sorry you lost your first pet that way.

gentle hug

p.s. - how's the scratchy throat?

Now it's my turn to say I can't type for the tears. A gentle squeeze of the hand for you.

i really wasn't going for sympathy, but thanks anyway. it's been a long time for gosh sake. i'm over it. i was just telling the story.

i'll try not to be so dramatic next time...

It is a profoundly shocking and moving experience to see any living creature pass away in front of your eyes, whether peacefully or violently, the images reverberate and stay with you forever.

I don't think you were overly dramatic. It's just that those of us who read your blog have learned that you are a caring gentle hearted person and we realise that this is a memory that will always have a twinge of pain. You are always one of the first to send words of comfort. This is our way of paying you back a bit ;) (((Hugs)))

Oh Rick,
Bless you. And at such a young age. There is nothing like the love of a great dog. But I agree with Chris on that one, there is nothing like the unconditional love of a pet. Kind heart, even kinder words that you have spoken of your *******.
