where is my magic wand?

dangnabit, i seem to have misplaced it.

if you can find a recording of Eva Cassidy singing this song, i dare say you'll be glad you did.

i'm at the public computer at VT where mom lives right now. sunday afternoon.
when i got home from austin last night i checked 2 or 3 blogs and then started this one about the song, "Oh Had I a Golden Thread." as i was searching for a video of the eva cassidy version my computer freaked out. blue screen with a warning to restart my computer to avoid further damage. yikes!

well, all i could do was shut it off completely as the mouse/keyboard didn't even function. when i turned it on again all i got was a red and white Compaq screen with something like this at the bottom: "esc=boot" (or something) and "F1=set up" (i think). needless to say, still no keyboard function. anyone have any suggestions?
no computer=no good in my book

how ironic is the title to this post considering my ornery computer? the craziest part is, i can't even remember what i was wishing for a magic wand or golden thread FOR.

i'll still have occassional access to this computer, but...what a bummer.

Oh, Had I a Golden Thread

Oh, Had I a Golden Thread
(Pete Seeger)

Oh, had I a golden thread
And needle so fine
I've weave a magic strand
Of rainbow design
Of rainbow design.

In it I'd weave the bravery
Of women giving birth,
In it I would weave the innocence
Of children over all the earth,
Children of all earth.

Far over the waters
I'd reach my magic band
Through foreign cities,
To every single land,
To every land.

Show my brothers and sisters
My rainbow design,
Bind up this sorry world
With hand and heart and mind,
Hand and heart and mind.

Far over the waters
I'd reach my magic band
To every human being
So they would understand,
So they'd understand.

I'll e-mail your problem to my computer expert friend, and let you know if he has any suggestions.

How aggravating for you!

Wish I could help with the computer problem, Rick. I'm not much of a techy though. I leave mine running all the time for fear it may not come back on if turned off. LOL Probably not the problem, but did you check to make sure your mouse is still plugged into the computer? Last time I had a glitch, I checked all the connections and when that didn't work, I unplugged the whole system and plugged it back in. That didn't work either, so I went out and bought a new computer. hehe (Told you I wasn't a techy.)

If you're comfortable with doing it pop open the case and try reseating all your cards, HD cables and processor plus what Joanne said. If this doesn't work, and you have it, pop in your Windows disk and see if it will boot from that.

If it does but you can't see the C: drive you probably had a HD failure.

Also, on boot up, one of the options will be for "Setup". Press the appropriate key (if your keyboard is working) and go to the HD or boot options. If the system sees your HD it will be there. If it is bad you probably won't.

If you can find anything by Eva Cassidy you're in luck.

Ah, the blue screen of death. It might be your motherboard. Time to call the Geek Squad!

Does the system start ok without any external devices plugged in? Unplug the Printer/etc and see if it starts up ok. If it is plugged into a power strip, plug the computer temporarily directly into the wall, to see if the power strip is bad.

If you are comfortable with it, try what Rick said about checking / reseating cables and cards inside the system case such as the CDROM or extra drives, video cards modems... or merely to try boot up without them, as this would point to the Power Supply Unit not working. (If fan doesn't come on, probably power supply, which is an easy fix)

If it IS on, Is the air coming out of any fans very hot? Are all fans running/spinning easily and fast? If not, it is possible that your system is overheating. (Including fan inside the case over the cpu) Computer generate a lot of heat and if it is not dissipated in some way (fans blowing it out of the case, etc) it can cause the system components to run slow/malfunction and give you weird results...

Replacement fans can be purchased at computer stores, although you may have to look around to find them. Frye's is good.

Hello Rick,
I am glad you are back, but I am sorry to hear of your computer problem..Ouch!

HUm I dont know how to fix them except pack it all up and take to your best computer fix-it guy. Maybe get a new one, and the computer guy can transfer all your files? Maybe?
